Amazon's UK site starts selling MP3 downloads

Amazon selling MP3 music on UK site

Download service launched quietly this morning with some albums on sale for £3

Amazon has started selling MP3 music files on its UK website.

The company had been selling MP3 music files via Amazon.com for some time, but launched the service on Amazon.co.uk with no publicity this morning.

The Amazon MP3 Store sells both singles and albums as DRM-free MP3 tracks that will play on almost any portable music player, including Apple's iPod. Prices currently start at 59p for a single track, with some albums available for just £3.

Users can buy both albums and tracks using the standard Amazon shopping cart. After purchasing a message appears stating "Your digital order is being processed", and the tracks are then available to download using the free Amazon MP3 Downloader tool.

However, rival site 7Digital criticised the quality of the music downloads offered by Amazon's service.

"Their MP3 downloads are only 256kps quality so they are not delivering the high-quality 320kps MP3's unlike 7digital.com," said CEO Ben Drury.
